And the winners are…

A ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition was held as part of the annual Merrepen Arts & Sports Festival in the NT’s Daly River region.

Music NT’s Indigenous Music Development Office Micah Wenitong was there to support the festival and act as a judge for the Battle of the Bands comp. He said both the Battle -  and the Festival – were “excellent!” The Merrepen Arts & Sports Festival ‘Battle of the Bands’ winners are:

1st – Red Sunset Band from Wadeye
2nd – Nauiyu Boys from Nauiyu
3rd – Lonely Boys from Ngukurr

Music NT IMDO, Micah Wenitong.Micah (pictured right) will continue his travels into regional NT, running music workshops in communities, meeting schools and Indigenous musicians. If you’d like to meet him and say hi, he will be at the following events in the first half of 2010:

June 11 : The Barunga Sports & Culture Festival, located in the Barunga Community, 80 kms southeast of Katherine. (The Festival also hosts its own Battle of The Barunga Bands Competition on Sunday afternoon June 12).
June 18 : Alice Springs to attend the AMCA launch gig, featuring Iwantja Band and Sunshine Reggae Band, at Ki Warehouse.
June 21-23 : Tennant Creek to meet local musicians
June 24 : Alice Springs for ‘Fight Back’
June 28-July 12 : Ramingining, East Arnhem Land, to run music workshops in the local community, then to support music events at the Ramingining Bak’Biddi Festival, 8 – 11 July.
