The 2011 Barunga Sports & Culture Festival was held June 10 – 13, and Music NT was on hand to support local musicians.
Music NT“s Indigenous Music Development Officer, Micah Wenitong, was again at this year’s Festival.
He met with local bands and musicians to discuss community projects.
Music NT also gave support at Barunga Sports & Culture Festival through assisting with the organisation and management of the band rehearsal space.
Micah says “thanks to the Jawoyn Association, Barunga School and the Shire council, nineteen community bands had the opportunity to rehearse their performances”.
He also says that local Barunga band Spring Water helped to make it possible for visiting community bands to access the equipped band rehearsal facility.
Spring Water is currently in preparation for a trip to Sydney late 2011.
Other great NT music acts who featured at Barunga Festival 2011 were The Chooky Dancers, Lonely Boys, East Journey and B2M, with One Africa from Sebegal and Broome’s Pigram Brothers also on the bill.
Congratulations to all the NT bands who helped make this year’s Barunga Festival such a great event!
Words: Megan Spencer & Micah Wenitong.
