Deadly-award winning Territory singer Jessica Mauboy will star in new film The Sapphires, in 2012.
Based on a true story – and a play by Tony Briggs – the Australian-international co-production will bring to the screen the story of four Indigenous female singers who were “plucked from obscurity” in 1968 to entertain Australian troops in the Vietnam war.
Quoted in The Australian, of her role Mauboy said, “It’s such an inspirational film and I can’t wait for people to see it.”
It comes on the back of appearances in award-winning movie musical Bran Nue Dae and the latest series of Underbelly, Razor.
Picking up the ‘Female Artist of the Year’ award at the 2011 Deadlys – her third – Mauboy has also announced tour dates with fellow pop idol Stan Walker, who like the Darwin singer, rose to fame on the music competition TV series, Australian Idol.
They will “each deliver a set featuring their solo hits, and then will come together to duet” during the concerts.
