Fresh back from his interstate tour, Alice Springs musician Will Kendrew – aka Seldom Party – has made a music video!
If any place is going to encourage a cash-strapped artist to get resourceful, it’s going to be the Territory. Will’s music video shoot was strictly one-man DIY affair which he recorded on the side of the road, between NT gigs!
He recounted to Music NT how he went about recording the images – which from the stills so far, look seriously epic.
“Seldom Party-style, the car window was my ‘camera man’; the almost windless ledge just inside my car window was my ‘sound man’ and unless [editing program] Final Cut Pro makes me too angry, I’ll be the editor”.
“A couple of the photo stills, a beer, and an unfinished pizza were ‘donated’ by tourists taking in the view”.
Shot at The Breakaways, 20 kms north of Coober Pedy, Will says that the music video is “a collection of live scenes to live music rather than a ‘dramatised’ music video”.
He decided to shoot the video along the Stuart Highway between his various Northern Territory gigs.
Will said he recorded footage for a number of songs on his Sinatra album including I Wanna Wake Up With You, My Literary Kingom, Raise Your Hand, Gypsy Thief and Good To Me. His aim is to fashion the clips into a kind of ‘live footage’ montage, set in the desert.
“This was probably the most dramatic location [for the shoot]” he adds, but he also found “a few more up and down the Stuart Highway, like at the Rainbow Valley turnoff”.
Will was one of three successful Northern Territory applicants for Round 22 of the Contemporary Music Touring Grants.
To support the debut release of his solo album Sinatra, Will used the grant to fund his recent 25-date, tri-state tour of the Northern Territory, South Australia and Victoria.
Stay tuned to the Music NT website to for the release date of his new music video!
