A record 65 participants and 7 bands are attending this year’s Bush Band Business in Alice Springs.

Bush Bands Business (BBBiz) is a series of workshops for Indigenous musicians and technicians in preparation for the Bush Bands Bash performance, 6pm, Saturday September 11th at Alice Desert Festival, Alice Springs.

The BBBiz bands include Tjupi Band (winners of the triple j’s One Night Stand Competition in Alice Springs), Desert Mulga, Iwantja Band, and Sunlight Band and Alunytjuru Band from the successful Turlku 4 CD, currently receiving national media attention and airplay. Mentors for BBBiz include Manuel Ngulupani Dhurrkay, Tableland Drifters and legendary singing star Warren H. Williams.

Now in its third year, the goal of BBBiz is professional development. Music industry trainers and professional musicians and technicians mentor the Bush Bands Bash musicians, with the bands able to rehearse under the guidance of experienced mentors.

This year the Bush Band Business will run September 8-11th at the Ross River Resort Campground. This three-day ‘Band Camp’ will provide the musicians with invaluable skills development and rehearsal opportunities, as well as the chance to focus completely on their music before their ‘big gig’.

Desert Divas: Indigenous Women’s Music Showcase is also another initiative presented by Music NT, designed to showcase emerging contemporary Indigenous female musicians and singers from Central Australia in front of the national industry. The artists – from remote communities and Alice Springs – will also particpate in a skills development workshop in the lead up to the their performance, with NT singing legend, Shellie Morris.

The Desert Divas performance will take place 12.30-2pm, Saturday September 11, Alice Desert Festival Play Stage, Anzac Oval, Alice Springs.

The Bush Bands Business and Desert Divas programs are both part of iNTune Music Conference Alice Springs and NT Music Month.

Exciting news from the Long Way To The Top End camp…

Organiser Alice Rae reports that, ” A massive 18 original live music acts from Australia’s Top End and Central Australia” will make their way to the Fuse Festival Music Showcase during the 2011 Adelaide Fringe Festival. (Please see the full list of bands below.) That’s six more than in 2009 when 12 Darwin-based bands made their way to Adelaide to play as part of the Fuse Festival Showcase, at the renowned live music venue, the Wheatsheaf Hotel.

In 2011 Long Way bands will perform from 15th-21st February at the Wheatsheaf Hotel and two additional venues: the Crown & Sceptre Hotel and Worldsend.

Jigsaw Collective and Sideshow Aly are just two of the Long Way To The Top End 2011 bands who will also perform in regional towns on the way to Fuse, travelling by bus on a return trip from Darwin to Adelaide. The 2011 tour is co-supported by Music NT and Artback NT, which is designed to expose the wealth of NT music talent across two states. “This is an opportunity for young and emerging bands to tour, promote their act and perform to new audiences,” says Mark Smith, manager of Music NT. Adds Alice, “It’s also intended to build links between NT and SA bands, encouraging SA bands to make the trek to Alice Springs, Darwin and other NT communities in the near future.”

Coordinating the event for a second time, musician Alice Rae will also perform at the Fuse Showcase with Country Town Collective, a band she co-founded in Adelaide before moving to Darwin in the mid-2000s. Alice is excited about the 2011 Long Way line up. “Leading the charge are Darwin heavyweights The NEO and Roymackonkey,” she says, and “five bands from Central Australia including roots-reggae outfit Minority Sun, Broome-based guitar duo Desert Child, energetic funk act Colourfide ex-Gold Coast (now based in Tennant Creek), and breakthrough Darwin rock band, Sweet Amber.”

Fundraiser gigs are also part of the lead up to the tour, with the first scheduled for 7pm, September 4th at the newly-refurbished Darwin Railway Sports & Social Club, Somerville Gardens, Parap. For gig details visit the Music NT Forum Events Calendar.

For more info about the Long Way To The Top End 2011 tour please visit the official website. And stay tuned to the Music NT website for further Long Way To The Top End 2011 tour updates!

“Meet the Bands…” The Bloody Marys, Cobble Stone, Coconut Groove, Colourfide, Country Town Collective, Desert Child, Jigsaw Collective, Katelnd and Leo, Kim Orchard, Minority Sun, The NEO, Roymackonkey, Scozzie, Seldom Party, Side Show Aly and J9, Sweet Amber, The Unknown Artists and Zed Major.

The seventh annual Indigenous Music Awards (IMAs) were held at the Amphitheatre in Darwin’s historic Botanical Darwins on Saturday August 28, 2010, in front of a 1500-strong crowd from all over Darwin, the NT and Australia.

The slickly-produced live show featured amazing performances by Warren H. Williams, Saltwater Band and Gurrumul Yunupingu, the Chooky Dancers, Ali Mills, Tableland Drifters, with Natalie Pa’apa’a from Blue King Brown – in town for Darwin Festival – also teaming up with Saltwater Band for a suprise collaboration towards the end of the show.

Elcho Island world music superstar Gurrumul Yunupingu – also part of Saltwater Band – was wildly welcomed to the stage by the crowd, as the recipient of the 2010 ‘Act of the Year’ Award. Garrangali Band picked up 3 awards, including ‘Album Of The Year’ with Wildflower ‘Best Emerging Act’.

Ali Mills and Rob Collins did a great job of hosting proceedings, with Ali Mills also receiving the ‘Special Recognition Award’, “for her significant contribution to the Indigenous music industry” after performing a cracking version of ‘Waltjim Bat Matilda’ to a delighted crowd. In another surprise appearance, Elcho Island’s famous Chooky Dancers performed a special tribute dance dedicated to their founder and mentor, the late Mr Garawirrtja.

And winners of the ‘School Band Award’ – Seven Star Band from Yirrkala CEC – will have a music video produced by the ABC as part of their prize, with other development and training also part of this Award.

See the IMA photo gallery on the Music NT Forum.

And the Awards also heralded an important development: it was announced that from 2011 the IMAS “will open nationally to all Indigenous musicians” around Australia.

Music NT would like to extend a massive congratulations to all of the winners, nominees and performers, and those involved in delivering such a great production.

The very first iNTune Music Conference will be held in Alice Springs from September 10-12, 2010. Although we are disappointed, particularly about losing him as a mentor for the seven Indigenous bands attending the Bush Bands Bash, we are happy to say that both events will continue with fantastic line-up of speakers and mentors such as country music great Warren H. Williams, triple J presenter Sarah Howells, and Australia Council Music Board representative and music producer Andy Ranzten. (Please note that Dan Sultan will still appear at the Alice Desert Festival).

And – don’t be surprised if there are some more great speaker and a session additions at the last minute! We’ll keep you up posted on the Music NT website.

The speakers arrived from all over the country for the 2010 iNTune Music Conference..

Seventeen from interstate attended with a contingent of eight local speakers from Darwin. Surprise speakers were also added to the program at the last minute, including ex-Living End drummer Travis Demsey and James Mangohig from Sietta, with Music NT Board member Adrian McNamara (Winanjikarri Music Centre) also stepping in to chair the Festivals masterclass. Metal drummer extraordinaire David Haley gave a great, sold out drumming masterclass at Happy Yess – and a brilliant live radio interview on ABC Local Radio Breakfast, with Leon Compton – and Steven Schram‘s Production masterclass at Subsonic was one of the Conference highlights for local music producers. Briony Petch from ‘After Dark’ on 105.7 ABC Darwin was a also a welcome addition to the iNTune program, giving great advice to local musicians on the ‘Radio Daze’ panel.

The Conference reached capacity and was sold out by the time doors opened at 9am Friday August 27. Musicians, bands, managers, teachers, students, producers, engineers and music composers from all over the Top End attended in droves. The iNTune Music Showcase featuring Worldfly and Unearthed iNTune Showcase Band The Moving Targets, was a big hit with delegates and speakers, as were the Darwin Showbag gigs at Happy Yess, and Leah Flanagan‘s album launch at the Lighthouse on Thursday evening (seriously rave reviews all round from the interstate speakers who attended..) Nhulunbuy band Sleeveheads – who were front and centre at iNTune – also played a killer set at the Darwin Railway Club late on Saturday night, after the IMAs. Opportunities were also being discussed between a number of local acts and visiting music publishers, programmers and bookers…

The 7th annual Indigenous Music Awards – hosted by Ali Mills and Robbie Collins and presented by Music NT – were another huge success on Saturday August 28, with hundreds attending the live concert and awards ceremony in Darwin’s Botanical Gardens. Interstate speakers were blown away by the night, sitting with the crowd at the front of the Amphitheatre to soak up the NT Indigenous music extravaganza. It included amazing performances by Warren H. Williams and band (featuring Music NT Chairman/axeman Cain Gilmour on lead guitar), 2009 Hall of Famers Tableland Drifters, Ali Mills, the Chooky Dancers, Saltwater Band with Gurrumul Yunupingu, and many others. What a stunning night of music!!! (Full details on the winners and the big night to come on the Music NT website soon!

iNTune speaker Steph Hughes – presenter of triple j’s Home and Hosed – has literally stepped off the plane home, and written a blog praising the many NT bands she encountered at iNTune. Read it here.

Congratulations and thank you to all of the artists involved in the events above; massive thanks to all of the speakers and delegates who attended iNTune and made the Conference such an incredible experience, and massive thanks also to the volunteers and staff at Music NT who made the event so enjoyable and professional. Can’t wait until next year!

Will Morris – aka “Wil Burr” from NT band Burrfoot – has been a busy man of late.. Not only has this Darwin musician been hard at it playing with his band, fuelling his model train obsession (more here), he’s also been busy writing and producing a new podcast, featuring original work by Northern Territory bands, performers and artists – completely off his own bat.

It’s called Shamzine. (Listen to it here.)

The first episode features music by Darwin bands Horse Trank, the now defunct Moses, Straight Skirt and Semishigure.

Will’s immediate aim is to use the “internetz” to spread the word about original Darwin music and independent original artists and performers, who may not get a guernsey in the usual places. Eventually he hopes to spread the net really wide by featuring music and work from all over the Territory and the ‘yarts’.

Anyone who is familiar with Will might also be familiar with his fondness for being wry or flip even.. But there’s a genuine optimism fuelling that perspective, largely inspired by the amount of talent in NT music that too often goes unnoticed. And anyone who’s ever read anything Will has written – posts on Facebook included – knows he likes to refer to Darwin as “Duh-win”, implying his love/hate relationship with his fair home city when it comes to getting ahead in original music. A mighty challenge in a town that loves its cover bands.

Thank goodness for indie podcasts and fanzines – or should I say “shamzines”.. Will takes us through it.

Semishigure artwork

Music NT: What prompted you to start Shamzine?

Will Morris: The original Shamzine was a photocopied DIY fanzine with hand drawn pictures/band logos all about Duh-win original bands. It was analogue cut and paste in that you took scissors and glue, and cut and pasted things. I made it over 10 years ago. It wasn’t very good. Every second page had an ad for my band on it. Or some lame pre-Emo Emo rant about some girl or something. *cringes*

I started writing about Duh-win bands because no one else was. And heaps of them are awesome.

I started V2 [Volume 2] again for a few reasons. First, heaps of Duh-win bands are awesome. Since the Happy Yess opened there’s been an epic resurgance of the underground scene here. And because there’s been a solid consistent pace where like-minded people can consolidate, there’s now all kinds of positive offshoots. Like rival metal production companies, independent recording studios popping up, Off The Leash magaine, interstate acts touring, local art and design start up teams, and heaps of stuff like that.

These people need to get there stuff out there. And until they start making serious money, commercial media isn’t going to take notice. But how are they going to get their stuff out there and make even laughable money if commercial media doesn’t help support and grow our local artists? With the internet/mp3 players/filesharing being pretty common these days it made sense to reboot SHAMZINE as a podcast/radio show from the internetz.

MuNT: What is your ‘philosophy’ behind it – or your ‘mission’? And what kind of culture are you personally interested in?

WM: the philosphy is in the theme song which is as follows: “It’s all about Duh-win music, it’s a really deadly show, listen to SHAMZINE 2.0″

Let’s deconstruct that; “its all about Duh-win music” ie it’s all about music and bands from Duh-win. I want to include organisations and artists (as in one art please) but it didnt fit into 2 bars… “Its a really deadly show”; the show is quite entertaining. If you listen to it your level of entertainment will go from mildly affronted, to slightly entertained. Provided your original state upon listening is mildly affronted.

Then, “listen to SHAMZINE 2.0”; this is SHAMZINE 2.0 and you should tell every single person you know about it and tell them to listen to it. Once you’ve told every single person you know about it, go out and meet new people for the sole purpose of enlightening them about SHAMZINEs existence.

MuNT: What kind of music will you feature in it?

WM: Original music. Preferrably not too shit.

MuNT: Do you have any help or is it you solo?

WM: I edit it all myself and put it all together. I put together the prototype and posted it and asked a few people for some constructive criticism and got some great feedback from that. That helped. And my partner Jen and my friend Jerome has been the SHAMTAXI which is awesome. But as far as the leg work goes it is all me. I did the first interview and got 1 1/2 hours of audio. During the process of editing it down to 4 – 5 minutes I thought “this isn’t very fun”, but I am still learning a lot. And I’m learning heaps about all my software/ tech as well. So that’s fun. Learning is fun kids. *cringes again*

MuNT: What do you hope for Shamzine – where would you like it to be heard in the long run? And do you think it will showcase NT artists interstate and internationally?

WM: It totally already has showcased Duh-win artists interstate and internationally! Its on the netz! In the long run hopefully more people will listen and support it and local bands/artists. Its not hard. Go see a band. If you like them, buy the bands CD. Easy.

MuNT: Hazarding a guess… Has Shamzine come about through any kind of ‘frustration’, living – and being a musician – in the Territory?

WM: the NT is a unique place. Most days I love it. Some days it’s the smelliest pile of fly covered shit in the park (full of fly covered shits). And the reason for loving it and hating it is ususally one and the same. It’s isolated. It doesn’t get much national/international attention. There’s no winter…

MuNT: Do you think the ‘net can help more geographically isolated musicians in Australia overcome not being heard, not having a voice in the national music ‘scene’?

WM: Yes and no. People still have to be aware of whatever website/blog/ whatever you’re trying to get them to be aware of. And the net is massive. Theres so much crap on it. How do I manage to get someone to click ‘play now’ on my site when theres 10000000 million other things that are also trying to get you to click ‘play now’..?

It’s good in that I can put my bands music/blog/whatever online for everyone to see, but it’s bad because evryone else can too. And has. And are way better at it than you[me].

MuNT: Have you got any funding to do this or are you doing it off your own bat?

WM: What is funding?

Wil Morris on stage with Burrfoot, in silhouette..

MuNT: How much time does it take you to produce Shamzine?

WM: I like making a theme song specific to the theme of the show. Like metal->metal etc..

It’s quite time consuming. The editing is long and tedious, but there’s heaps more to do. Like communicate with people. Maintain/create content/website etc. Brainstorm and then produce feature ideas. Getting time to talk to people is also hard. Everyone is busy living 3 lives. Me included. It takes most of my not-at-work time.

MuNT: How do you produce it? What gear is involved, where is your ‘studio’, and how often do you work on it?

WM: My set up is mobile. I use a laptop. It’s Windows-based (PC for life!). I use a Rhode podcaster USB mic. It’s stereo. I’m still trying a few different programs for editing. I’ve tried Audacity, Cubase and Reaper but I think I’m going to stick with Reaper. The software is great to use, and the company has a very refreshing outlook towards its customers.

It’d be great to get some serious recording gear and do live recordings of local bands. That would be freaking awesome. SHAMZINE present… SEMI-STRAIGHT-HORSE-FOOT… Live at Happy Yess. I just got a shiver. Woot.

I’m also still trying to find some better web site options. (Anyone know of any good free/cheap hosting?! Email me shamzinev2@gmail.com)

MuNT: Do you listen to other music podcasts that you may have taken some inspiration from?

WM: The only podcast I listen to is the Atomic Reactor. It’s a bit nerdy.

MuNT: What’s the best thing about listening to podcasts – and making this one?

WM: Podcast are cool ‘cause they’re so niche. Anyone can do it, on any subject.

MuNT: Are you looking for people to submit their music to you, so you can feature it in Shamzine?

WM: Sure am! email me at shamzinev2@gmail.com and we can talk about it!

Moses

MuNT: Will you cast your net beyond music for content in Shamzine?

WM: Yes. I’d like to talk to anyone who’s involved in anything to do with supporting original music, art, theatre, production, etc. Also, if you want to submit an article you’ve done yourself, or want to get involved in the production side of things, email me.

You can send me an mp3, a link, a photo of your pets, what ever. Drop me a line or we can meet somewhere.

MuNT: How long do you think you will keep doing it, without any funding? And would you like to get some funding for it?

WM: I’d love some funding. I need a better web site that you can download eps from. Instead of having to sit at the compter to listen to it. I don’t expect anyone to sit there for 30 mins at the PC once a month. I need for people to be able to download it as an mp3 an listen to it where ever/whenever. That’s kind of the whole point of podcasting.

And for that I need some money. Not much either. Maybe I can do a fund raiser or launch gig that can pay for some web hosting. That’d be cool.

I don’t know how long I’ll do it… I’ve got heaps of ideas for content, and more pop in my head all the time. I’ll try and get through all those first and see how we go after that. I’ve got no plans to stop. It’s really fun talking to bands I like and asking them dumb questions. And making people do sign-ons is fun also.

MuNT: Please finish this sentence: “The future’s so bright…”

WM: “…. that a protectorate of pteryguim has started a conflict with the indigenous peace-loving Dysplastic Nevi on my shoulder.I’ve tried all sorts of medicinal treatment, when really I should just go inside.”

Listen to Shamzine here. Read more about Will’s trains here, and more about Will’s band Burrfoot here.

And check out another cool NT music podcast/blog (produced by another Will (Kendrew), in Alice Springs)… Seldom Party.
