HOT SHOTS is a fantastic Northern Territory music photography competition that focuses on the wealth of music talent – and music photography talent – in the Northern Territory.
A Music NT initiative, HOT SHOTS runs annually in conjunction with the 2011 iNTune Music Conference in Darwin and Alice Springs.
It’s all about celebrating original music in the Northern Territory, through the eyes of ‘the punter’. HOT SHOTS allows NT musicians and music events to be exposed to audiences in a fun and engaging manner.
In 2011 the exhibition ran:
- In Darwin from August 9-26 at Darwin Community Art Space, Darwin City Council, Harry Chan Avenue, Darwin CBD.
- In Alice Springs from September 2-23 at Alice Springs Library, Corner Leichhardt & Gregory Terrace, Alice Springs
People were able to vote at both venues in person for their favorite picture, for the ‘Peoples Choice’ Award. They could also vote online, by viewing the photos on Facebook and ‘Liking’ their favorite photo.
A panel of three judges voted for the ‘Best Photo’ Award: Cameron Boon (Centralian Advocate), Justin Sanson (NT News) and Russell Brown (Darwin Camera House). The prizes for both awards were $50 iTunes vouchers.
And the winners for 2011 were:
- ‘Best Photo’ – Alice Springs photographer Oliver Eclipse, for ‘Mirror‘, a picture he took of soul singer Dan Sultan on stage at Alice Desert Festival on 12th September, 2010.
- ‘Peoples Choice’ – Darwin photographer Nico Liengme for ‘Portals?‘, a picture he took of Alice Springs death-metal band Miazma at the ‘Descent Alice Springs’ gig, on April 23rd, 2011.

Hot Shots is open to NT residents and up to 6 entries per person are accepted, with photos of NT musicians – and music events held in the NT – eligible for entry. Stay tuned to the Music NT website for details about when to enter Hot Shots in 2012!
