Indigenous Music Awards

The Indigenous Music Awards were held for the 7th year in Darwin on August 28th.

These awards – fast becoming the Aria’s of Indigenous Music – continue to surprise with the breadth and depth of talent. The rich musical landscape of the NT has hundreds of bands in remote places and the Indigenous Music Awards bring together local acts who have yet to make their mark on the world, alongside Territorians who have achieved international acclaim [such as Gurrumul & Jessica Mauboy who headlined last year’s award ceremony] in a very special celebration of music from all corners of the NT.

Held under the stars at Darwin’s historic Amphitheatre, audiences from all over Australia gather at this beautiful event to applaud the winners, enjoy the performances and soak up the ambiance of a night for music lovers of all ages and all cultures to enjoy.  Yothu Yindi, Gurrumul, and Arnhem Land rock-stars Saltwater Band have all performed numerous times and won awards. This year’s line up promises to be yet another spectacular showcase; and as usual will feature some very special musical collaborations that can only be witnessed on this star-filled night. 2009 Award winner and headline act, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu surprised the crowd last year, inviting many of his family members on stage to sing alongside him as he performed his closing song. It is rare moments like these that make this special family focused event a not-to-be-missed night on Darwin’s August calendar.
“Many members of [Gurrumul’s] family… flew in from Elcho Island especially for the show and joined them on stage for the finale. It was a fitting end to the awards, in which the world-dominating Gurrumul was named Act of the Year” Iain Shedden (The Spin Doctor) The Australian

The Indigenous Music Awards return for 2010 to celebrate the amazing Indigenous Music talent that exists in the Northern Territory. The event in 2009 attracted a record crowd and featured performances from Australia’s leading Indigenous performers Jessica Mauboy and Geoffrey “Gurrumul” Yunupingu.

The Awards celebrate excellence in Indigenous Music from the Northern Territory and the event will present to audiences some of the amazing talent that exists in the Northern Territory.   The awards ceremony and concert will be held on Saturday 28th August at the Amphitheatre Darwin.
