NORTHERN TERRITORY REMOTE & REGIONAL MUSIC EDUCATION SYMPOSIUM

Presented by the NT Department of Education, NT Music School and Music NT.

The Symposium was an important and timely forum for Music Education Service Providers and funding organisations from around Australa, that have an interest in Indigenous Music Education in the NT. As the peak body for music education in government schools, NT Music School aimed to facilitate a more efficient, coordinated and sustainable model for service delivery to Indigenous students. The overarching question for this Symposium? “How can we all work together to improve music education to Indigenous students?”

Participants in the Symposium were invited from all relevant sectors, including the Federal Government. Day I saw speakers make a brief presentation outlining their activities past and present. Day II allowed opportunities for networking, more informal discussions and the exchange of ideas.

The aim of the Symposium was cooperative and tangible outcomes for all concerned, especially students in remote and regional Indigenous communities.

INDIGENOUS EMPLOYMENT PARTNERSHIP FOR THE NORTHERN TERRITORY MUSIC SECTOR

Robbie Collins (APRA NT) and NT music legend Barry Benning, at the Indigenous Music Expo, 2009.

The Indigenous Employment Partnership was launched on Wednesday August 19th 2010 at Parliament House, Darwin.

The IEP is an initiative between the NT and Australian governments, and the music industry. It is designed to give ongoing vocational opportunities in the music industry to Indigenous students, linking their school training with real jobs.

Music NT brought to Darwin some of the Northern Territory’s leading Indigenous musicians to participate in an Indigenous Music Expo.  The list includes musicians from right across the NT – from south of Alice Springs to the Tiwi Islands. In Darwin they participated in the NT Remote & Regional Indigenous Music Education Symposium (see above) and getting first hand information on the launch document and what it can mean for their regions.

The participants in this Expo were also able to attend the iNTune Music Conference, providing opportunities for remote and regional musicians to network and learn from some of Australia’s leading music industry figures.
