Day I – Friday September 9, 2011

Session I: 9am-12.30pm ‘Introduction to GarageBand’ (CDU Media Lab, Charles Darwin University, Grevillea Drive, Alice Springs).

Learn the basics of recording and editing music on a Mac.

Facilitator: Phillip Eaton (Music NT/APRA)

Session II: 2pm-5.30pm ‘Advanced Studio Techniques’ (Red House, CAAMA & Hugestars Studios).

6pm Sunset Street Parade

Begins Council Lawns, through Todd Mall to Opal POD Space, Anzac Oval (FREE).

7pm – 11pm Registrations & Launch Function (Totem Theatre, Anzac Oval).

Network and relax with delegates & panellists with the sounds of the Alice Desert Festival in the background.

Session III: 7.30pm – 8.30pm APRA Connect (Totem Theatre, Anzac Oval)

‘Connect Meetings’ are APRA’s way of introducing you to APRA and some of the things you need to know in order to get the most from your membership. These meetings are open to APRA members and interested songwriters. It’s a great chance to meet other local songwriters and the new APRA reps. Beverages and light refreshments provided.

8.30pm Alice Desert Festival Opening Night Concert (Anzac Oval).

Festival Main Stage: Blue King Brown supported by local crowd-pleasers Tjupi Band & Dr. Strangeways.

NB. This is a ticketed Desert Festival Event ($30 on the door).

Day II: Saturday September 10th, 2011

9am: Registrations

Session I : 10am – 12pm, ‘Feedback on Five’ (Desert Festival Play Stage, Anzac Oval).

Local bands play their best 5 minutes of music to a panel of music industry experts who give them critical feedback and suggest directions in which they could move forward with their work. Apply now to be one of the bands! Places are limited so pre-registration is essential – milyika@musicnt.com.au

12 noon: Lunch (Totem Theatre, Anzac Oval).

Session II: 12.30pm – 2pm, ‘Desert Divas’ Indigenous Womens Music Showcase (Desert Festival Play Stage, Anzac Oval).

A showcase of emerging contemporary Indigenous female musicians, singers and rappers from Central Australia. From remote communities and Alice Springs, Desert Divas 2011 is the beautiful and diverse voice of Aboriginal women today.

This year the ‘divas’ include Jacinta Price, Catherine Satour, Kirra Voller, Lil Hampton and Jessica Laruffa from Alice Springs; Cassandra Williams (Hermannsberg); Shirelle Young and Courtney Singleton from Yuendemu;

Session III: 2pm – 3.30pm, ‘Sell Yourself’ Publicity Masterclass (Totem Theatre, Anzac Oval).

Need to create an EPK, or write a bio? How do you use Facebook, Twitter, and Soundcloud to get people listening? Learn the tricks of getting the attention of media and fans from some of Austalia’s best. This is a practical workshop so be prepared to write, upload, and talk it up. Session IV: 2.30pm-3.30pm Desert Divas: Intro to the Music Industry (Totem Backyard)

Session V: 3.40pm – 4.50pm Music Publishing 101 (Totem Theatre, Anzac Oval).

Quite simply: how to get paid for being a songwriter.

Panelists: John Ferris, Pip Norman. Facilitator: Clive Hodson

6pm Bush Bands Bash, Alice Desert Festival Event (Festival Main Stage, Anzac Oval).

Bush Bands Bash is one of the biggest and most vibrant Indigenous music events in Australia and the biggest concert on the Alice calendar. This dynamic showcase celebrates culture and language through contemporary rhythms. The bands have been selected from the major language groups across the Central Australia region – from WA through to the APY Lands, Arrente Country and north into the Barkly. Now in its 8th year, Bush Bands Bash continues to promote music for a healthy life.

Day III: Sunday September 11, 2011.

Session II: 11.30am ‘On the Road & Touring’ (Totem Theatre, Anzac Oval).

Intra-state, interstate, and international – this session will give you an insight into opportunities available for touring, as well as the realities of being on the road.

Arts funding can assist you to tour, develop and record music. Help us create an online calendar of grants through case studies and questions.

Session IV: 2pm ‘Teaching Music Remotely’ – Roundtable (Totem Theatre, Anzac Oval)

Session V: 3.30 – 5.30pm ‘DIY Home/Bush Studio’ Masterclass (Totem Theatre, Anzac Oval)

Music Showcase: 5.30 – 8.30pm ‘Songs from Big Sky Country’, Alice Desert Festival Event (Festival Main Stage, Anzac Oval).

Indigenous musicians Warren H. Williams, Catherine Satour and Jacinta Price live in concert with Darwin Symphony Orchestra – an orchestral sensation not to be missed! Songs from Big Sky Country will bring you music of the desert backed by the powerful sounds of strings, brass and percussion. NB. This is a ticketed Desert Festival Event (Gold coin donation).

Music NT exists to support the growth and development of original contemporary music in the Northern Territory. Music NT Inc. is the non-profit member based music organisation for the Northern Territory representing, developing and servicing the Territory’s original music industry.
